There is no such thing as a car without an emergency kit. Before kids, I kept an emergency kit for things having to do with car trouble plus a small bag of supplies for me (makeup, etc). Now that we have kids, our car emergency kit looks a lot different. It has a lot more stuff but I keep it compact and store most things in a backpack. For larger items, I store them in some of the handy compartments our trunk has. One might think such a list is a bit overboard but having survived a freak blackout in NYC and a crazy ice storm in Atlanta, I know first hand how important it is to have some things on hand in an emergency. And when kids are involved, a well-stocked family car emergency kit is that much more important.
Here’s what’s in our family car emergency kit.
For the Family
- First aid kit with extra bandaids, medication, and dispensers for kids
- Extra clothes, underwear and socks (for everyone)
- Extra shoes and flip flops
- Bottles or Sippy Cups
- Snack cups
- Portable potty (An absolute must for potty trainers and road trips)
